Kiyomizudera / A temple of many adventures over a waterfall in Kyoto

Kiyomizudera is to the east of Kyoto in the wooded hills

Great Views

Kiyomizudera, meaning Pure Water Temple, gets its name from the water that falls in the waterfall below it. The waterfall's water is separated into three smaller streams that visitors can get cups and fill there. In addition to just being atop a waterfall that can be overlooked from its rooms, the temple also has a wooden stage that hangs over the area below. This stage offers a fantastic view of cherry and maple trees. Hanging 13 meters above the hillside below, this is an awe inspiring point to view the area below.

Getting there is half the fun

The temple itself a great experience and a good enough reason to visit this area. In addition to the temple, the city leading to the temple is fun and exciting to visit. Higashiyama District is the busy and cultural experience that visitors to the temple experience on the way. Throughout this town there are many shops and restaurants to visit. These shops have a lot of their business in tourists and pilgrims. They sell everything from local speciality products to typical souvenirs.

Other activities nearby

Very near the temple are many other temples that are worth a look themselves. Jishu Shrine is located directly behind Kiyomizudera and is dedicated to the god or goddess of love and matchmaking. This temple has a legend that if jone can walk from one stone in the front of the building to the other with one's eyes closed, it will bring good luck in finding love. Having someone guide one between the stones is considered to mean that there will need to be an intermediary in one's love life. On Kiyomizudera's grounds there is also a Koyasu Pagode, which is said to bring easy and safe childbirth to those who visit.
